The Vitro years, Part 2.

I remember the drive from Groton Connecticut to Maryland vividly. We had a little blue Chevy Spectrum. The car had no power and was actually Japanese. It held together ok, I must admit.

The Van carrying the plywood boxes that had been filled with everything we owned were on a separate trip, of which I had no idea how it was going. It was all boxed up, loaded and disappeared a day earlier.

The drive was interesting, because I had not been through New Jersey before. The north side of the state by NYC was skanky. As you move south it gets nicer, but we were only seeing it from the interstate. My son got to see the World Trade center towers for the first time as we passed through New York.

Sorry, I am being self indulgent. We drove to Maryland and arrived near the new location very late at night. We pulled up to the same Ramada Hotel that I had stayed at when I had interviewed for the job in Maryland, right on RT28 at I270. We went inside and waited for someone to show up at the empty front desk. A young guy showed up and said they were booked up for the night. I was very tired and immediately got a bit angry and asked if they did not have “anything” available. The kid backed down and said he had the honeymoon suite open and we could have that. It was ironic, because I never had a honeymoon and we got the room at the rate of a regular twin. The room was mediocre, but nicer than average.

In the morning, my new life started, I woke up and the Navy was not there to wipe my ass anymore. It was just us and must say the “team” had some flaws. I won’t go into details here, but ask me if you want more about that.

We moved into the apartment unseen, right off Clopper Road and I immediately hated the place. The cheap wood tile floors creaked everywhere you walked and the people below us were very loud. The same creaky tiles were in the apartment above us, so that was noisy too. I learned to accept the nuisances and slowly settled into my first bit of adult life without the Navy teat to suck on.

When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts

I watched all of this crap HBO show that I could stand tonight. It was full of videos and images of the massive damage in New Orleans after Hurricane katrina. It was also full of BS.

When I saw the bit with a reverend, or just some dude, who they never said was even there at the time, spewing quotes like “the soldiers were tearing the babies out or their parents arms”, I shut it off.
I am a parent and if I had one of my babies in a situation like that, first off, I am a bad parent. Second off, I would kill anyone who tried to take my baby away from me and I expect the same from anyone else there. I didn’t hear any reports of soldiers fighting with parents over babies, or any parents being killed by soldiers. WTF!?

Right before they had people complaining about their (never used the term extended) families being spread out across the US. Well folks, there were only so many locations in the country ready to handle the influx of thousands of refugees, so you really should be god damn thankful someone took you in?? They didn’t sound like they were. Ingrates.

The only thankful thing I saw was a manager of the hotel next to the Dome there, which was a horrific mess, thanks to the Mayor telling people to go there when it was already too late. The manager was thankful that the National Guard helped secure his building, while the Dome was emptied, right through the hotel lobby. They made that sound like it was a bad thing? I do recall the Dome was laced with gang members, causing trouble, so why was this bad?

They had lots of video of dead people, mostly black, and that was all horrible and disrepectful to the dead. They were bitching about the bodies not being “cleaned up”, but that would be a City matter, right? That would be Mayor Nagin’s deal right? Why did he leave so many poor people in harms way? Why did he do this to his people? He didn’t have a damn plan! Yet, they re-elected the turd ball, just because he stood up and blamed the Federal Government (not even the State, which should have been there first), for his own piss poor planning. Pat your dumb ass on the back dude and all you dummies that re-elected that ass.

Much of New Orleans lies below sea level. The Sea = “Nature”. “Nature” will do whatever it wants, no matter what we build to try to hold it back, man will always lose that battle and always has. Like that butter commercial used to say, “Don’t fool with Mother Nature” and then a thunder clap.

New Orleans should listen to the thunder clap and move to higher ground. Most people have, but the governement want’s to rebuild! Sheer genious. I think it comes down to evolution really, because, well, you know why. If you stay there now, you will eventually prove you are stupid and you will die. Don't complain to me about it, it's your choice.

I wanted to post Vitro Part 2…

My work didn’t include any insructions with the new VPN client, so I can’t get it installed today, because the file is on my work Laptop (which I use at home on weekends, when I am not on the clock and just monitor work communications).
No big deal, no one reads this anyway. I blame the few who do read it for not speading the word. I might care more if I had more readers.

So tonight, I will just spew.

The dogs I have crapped all over my livingroom and dining room last night. I have previously established that they are not MY dogs, but are in fact the property of an X-galfriend, who left me and left me the dogs. Why won’t they sit in one spot and do that though?? No, they have to go all over the place. I won’t let me house be their tiolet, no way.

They are near death at this point. It will be a humane legal death, by injection, by professionals in killing animals, the Humane Society. I told my son tonight that I was ready to take them to their fate right now, but he said no. I told him he will have to set his alarm for 2:30AM to get up and let the beast’s out and he agreed. It is a noble gesture on his part to do that. Maybe it will help, but I doubt it.

I figure I have housed, fed and paid for medical treatment for the two dogs for about 9 years, which is 9 years longer thatn they would have had at all, no one else would have adopted them both (brothers). I figure it has cost me $10,000 or more to care for the ingrates, so I don’t at all feel bad about nearing the point that they get put down for good. I gave them 9 years they wouldn’t have had otherwise, pretty generous I think.

They have to be 14 or so years old now, but I don’t know for sure, because the Humane Society didn’t know their age when she got them. So that’s that. I will let you know when they are put under.

I wanted to also mention “K” at work. After today, I have to say she is the only one on my team who I really connect with professionally at this point and actually “get’s it”. If she left, I would lose all hope and turn to Yoda and say “That girl is our last hope”. And he would say “No, there is another…” Then it would fade out like my hopes. But there might be another…
I will have to wait for Episode 3 to find out, which starts October 1st.

The Vitro years, Part 1.

From 1987, when I left the Navy, until 1996, I worked for just one company. Vitro, in Maryland. It wasn’t a small or very large company, but in the Rockville area, they provided a lot of jobs, over 3,000. They were fairly important because the area was sliding into a period of decline. There were many elderly people nearby, left over from the hay days of the late 60’s and early 70’s technology/electronics boom, who couldn’t afford to retire in Florida.

Vitro was basically a DOD contracting firm and we often wound up partnering with competitors, especially on dirty or large scale projects. Before I left the company (laid off) they were bought by the competitor Tracor (here is a Company history from the time Tracor owned Vitro https://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/Vitro-Corp-Company-History.html ) and then later by BAE (that bad British company). The number of area employees has plummeted; they are now housed in just one of the original group of buildings. Some sites were sold and others (like the original Vitro headquarters on Georgia Avenue) were bulldozed to make way for commercial progress. The company was driven into the ground, but I am sure a few at the top languish in Miami, even as I type this.

I was freshly out of the Navy and moved my (then) wife and son to Maryland. My starting salary was a whopping $24K per year. This was a huge step up from the $19K I was getting in the Navy, but I had not calculated the cost of living increase and the fact that housing would not be free anymore. I was constantly in a state of debt that I have only recovered from in the past 5 years, long after I was out of Vitro and free of a girlfriend. Any girlfriend. Funny how broke and girlfriend go hand in hand?

That is the big picture, but I will delve into what it was like being a very shy, young, white guy that is stepping into corporate America for the first time. It’s something many people leaving the Military go through, but the timing of my shift in history made for some very interesting days.

Why I don't look at Rocketboom anymore

The fact that this freak calls this crap "art" (and the show devotes an episode to it), is why I don't wander there, unless I am extremely bored. He needs a shrink, not a show.

More Music

Elizabeth And The Catapult are a musical anomaly. They have no label and just do their own thing, have fun. It has to infuriate the big music companies that the band is getting so much attention and they can’t cash in on it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7XPiGeY3Kk
A segment they did on Billboard Underground..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xeCqiVIamA
She’s painfully cute and has a great voice. The band keeps it solidly simple.
I expect they will do great things if they can keep their feet on the ground and not wind up like Winehouse, ironically in Rehab.

Angélique Kidjo, from Africa is labeled “Afro Funk”, with a twist of everything else. Peter Gabriel has propelled her career forward and their collaboration tunes are getting some airplay. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXGa1tMnbdk They are touring together too. She did an interesting Hendrix cover, of Voodoo Child.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9ACprQXFwI

Mezzanine by Massive Attack is interesting, electro um, something. I am not going to give you a link to their site, because it gave me a headache. I can appreciate them trying something different, VERY DIFFERENT, but I find it impossible to get to what I want. I don’t have time to solve the puzzles, I am too busy trying to survive the day.

The Brunettes are a trendy POP duo out of the UK. I can't think of who they remind me of, but it's someone. Crisp sound and not over-produced. http://www.myspace.com/thebrunettes

Eisley are a family band, like the Partridge’s were toted to be, but they really are. They are young and all cute and sound great. If you pick up the CD/DVD combo called Combinations, watch the DVD and tell me you don’t agree, that the Base player needs to drop some uppers! If he jumped around the stage it would add some much needed energy to their live shows. Actually, if any of them moved around, it could only help. They need to watch Stop Making Sense, by the Talking Heads. http://eisley.com/index.php Click on Gallery for photos and videos.

Microsoft’s answer to DRM

DRM is Digital Rights Management. It is meant to keep bad guys from playing a song they paid for and downloaded, on a different computer or device (it controls that crap). I personally DON’T CARE about DRM, because I don’t buy music online, or on iTunes (a despicable application/site). Everything I play was ripped from a CD I own (as a legal backup), or something I downloaded free of charge on the NET. Many record labels have sites with free downloads, as do bands MySpew web pages. So those are not protected, DUH. The mfpmp.exe process seems to have trouble understanding that.

WARNING: After I did this, some of my media (a good chunk of it) wouldn't play, so I undid what I changed here.

So I have my new home Vista (Fist-ya) computer and every time I play a music file, this one process called mfpmp.exe goes nuts. Its Windows new answer to DRM, protecting the rights of the stupid, I suppose. I got sick of my songs perpetually sputtering as I listen and did some digging around and found some tips on removing the annoyance. None worked, so I did this;

Booted my PC into Safe Mode (hit F8 as the machine starts to boot..Repeatedly).

Pick Safe Mode and login as myself, or Administrator, if I am not an administrator.

Open Explorer and browse to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\

Scroll down to the file mfpmp.exe and right click it and click Properties.

Click the Security Tab and highlight the Users group.

Click the check box for Full Control.

Click Apply, then close the box.

Right click on the file again and pick Rename.

Rename the file to mfpmpa.exe.

Hit enter and reboot. No more mfpmp.exe, at least until Microsoft drops an update down to replace it, which will happen soon I am sure.

My music now plays perfectly, no sputters, jerks or pauses. Go figure?

Is this Gay?

http://www.redbalcony.com/?vid=21152

I wasn't sure. They seem pretty butch at the beginning. This is so hard for me sometimes, I just don't know. Maybe, a bit? Gosh...

I am such a good Samaritan…

My pal Jenny had her computer go tits up, so it was screwed. Dead hard drive. I plugged in the secondary drive from my older PC, which was not being used and I’m in the long process of reloading the OS and installing updates. It will take all weekend to get it up to speed, the updates will take a day all by themselves. Gotta love Windows.

While I hate helping others with their computer woes, it is a nice feeling knowing I was capable and have the knowledge to help a friend in need. Big time in need.

Her dog even behaved and was only up in my face for the first few minutes I was there. That’s nice.

Wait till I hit her with the bill!! Kidding!!

NOAA is our friend

Yeah, they issued a Tropical Storm warning AFTER the storm was on land and getting weaker. Erin was not named until it was over San Antonio Texas, about 150 miles inland. Isn't that just a low pressure center??
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at5+shtml/090726.shtml?5day?large

It's not in the Tropics! They are just panicking because they won't be anywhere near their "prediction" for storms this year.

I did some research on Ron Paul…

I kept hearing about this guy’s “Revolution”, so I figured I would do a little research.

His site http://www.ronpaul2008.com/about/ states he left office “voluntarily” in 1984, but fails to mention he had no chance of winning his House seat again, so decided to run for the Senate and lost there too.

So I went to look at his voting record and he is definitely a Republican. http://www.vote-smart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=296

He voted against all of the Farm bills and the Endangered Species bills. He obviously doesn’t care about our world. Look at his voting record on Appropriations! He votes no for almost everything, except the Tobacco bill that would “prohibit the use of any funds appropriated in the bill to subsidize crop insurance for tobacco crops”, which I can actually agree with. But all the No’s and No Votes are baffling! What do you want us to spend our money on?

He is anti-gay, anti abortion, and didn’t even cast a vote on the last Defense Appropriations bill. Could that be construed as “not supporting our troops”?? He didn’t vote on the Energy bill either. Was he out of town or something? Busy making his bid for the White House, I suppose.

The first sentence on his web site is “Congressman Ron Paul is the leading advocate for freedom in our nation’s capital”, yet he voted against DC having a vote in the House, which I think is despicable, hypocritical and a purely political stance. He voted against the Campaign Finance Reform bill too, gotta keep those palms greased, right?

He’s a slicky boy, but not really a boy anymore, he’s old. He and his “revolution” will get pummeled and hopefully he will lose his House seat in the process. And if he grew up in PA, why is he representing TX??

Too Funny (follow-up)

NOAA just released an update to their hurricane season “prediction”. Based on the lines on their palms, they are not backing off the prediction of a 85% chance of an above average Hurricane season; http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2007/s2905.htm

I bet these guys are all for legalizing pot too, because they must be smoking quite a bit of it. “Dude, let me see the palm of your hand!”

Personally, I am neutral on the matter of legalizing it, because I am not a user. I would note that the majority of people who use it that I do know, are losers.

Too Funny

NOAA is keeping their “predictions” for 2007 up on their web site. At this point, they must be praying for a major storm? A little counter productive, I think. And the huge budget they pull from the US economy is obviously mostly wasted. The sad thing is no one but the few who might read this Blog might actually complain about it.

As of today, we are well into “peak” hurricane season in the Atlantic…and there has been nada, nothing, nien, niet, NO MAJOR STORMS.

Who do I call to call BS on these “predictions” and the agency for making them? Let me know please.

Scroll down to Page 14 of this, and you will see the NOAA budget for 2007 is over 2.5 billion dollars. What are we paying for here??? What are they doing? They are wrong again…
http://www.corporateservices.noaa.gov/~nbo/Cong_Justification/pdfs/FY07_Entire_CJ.pdf

While I admit NOAA has some great science behind them, the whole “prediction” thing has to be un-funded, pronto.

Music you haven’t heard…The V’s plus..

John Vanderslice is a unique entity. He sounds a bit depressing, but I find the music honest and riveting http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNNzGhzIAVo
The tune Trance Manual is hypnotic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6i_uJfNnG4
Pick up the CD Pixel Revolt if you like these.

Vertical Horizon have a bit of a Country twang to their tunes, but they should be accepted as more “main stream”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09TYuAxNVMk I think they had moderate success on the “charts”, but I think they deserve more.
They are more than another kid band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEKQbjMWHMk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nt0bKL0rJZM
I really like the song “I’m Still Here” (used in a popular cartoon here). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TM0PKhWXh0

Voxtrot is a very young band, out of Texas. They are one of the few things to come out of the state in ages, besides gas, that I can get behind. Steven is a great tune..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GL4yGtj6N5w
It unfortunately demonstrates their one weakness. They need another voice in the mix because the music isn’t “deep” enough to carry most of the tunes. I have actually chatted with the band through the web, when I got restless for a full length CD. Now that I bought it and listened to it, I was 100% correct. They need another voice. I made a suggestion to a contact in LA, Taylor Lee, that she contact the band when they return from their EU tour. They would sound great together. Who knows..maybe something will come of it. On Voxtrot’s part it would be a step away from being a “band”, and into being a “BAND”! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDw-Sx9qlEE They have fun though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECv3VorGpxQ

The Verve Pipe had one hit that stuck, The Freshmen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVNAp1C8LIw Great song, but so many more of their songs are insanely great. The CD Underneath should have won Album Of The Year in 2001, but was completely overlooked. You can get it on Amazon.com for just over 3 bucks and when you listen to it, you will cry. The music is that damn good…

Wolfmother rocks like no one I have heard since the 70’s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKPPnGsdh0A Oh yeah, they are the real deal..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFyQ1wRTaS8 You don’t need to score any speed, just pop in their self titled debut album.
This is their idea of mellow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeHwgR8pQhg

And to finish, Xiu Xiu are, well, um, unique. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJFmpLvofrM
Um, they are a religious duo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsgjdS-O-FQ
They seem to like video games http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLM0Sd_IhG8
I like this, but you have to give it a sec or two.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CgKO2haaAo
Don’t ask me, I’m just tossing it out there……

A win-win

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6934183.stm Screw these a-holes.

Music you haven’t heard…The S’s, T’s and U’s…

Saint Etienne is a real surprise to me, mostly because I had never heard of them before. It makes me mad that these artists from outside the US are always denied any airplay here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jr9q5h8ftuY Tell me you don’t like this, or this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4kKNz6RMWo Too cute, I love the retro stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXeC8nMdr_E

The Servant is a real good young UK band, with a lot of promise and talent. I haven’t heard them in the US yet at all, but I don’t listen to music radio at all anymore, ask me why? http://www.theservant.co.uk/ Their web site is really creative and if you click on “Sounds and Visions” you can choose to listen to most of their music and videos. They have been popping out albums for 7 years now, I hope they can catch on in the US without selling out (yeah right). The US music scene would allow no such thing, thus this blog exists…

The Shins have enjoyed moderate success with their inclusion in the soundtrack to the movie Train Spotting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M11Kr1-q-pA New Slang was the big “hit”. Don’t get me wrong, I love the song. This is good too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqYMRcnLU0o I like their earlier CDs fine, but the new one, Wincing the Night Away is just an attempt to reprise what they did before. There’s nothing original in it, sadly. It was quite a while between albums too. I hate to sound like I am bashing them, because I really like them. I think their album Oh Inverted World should be mandatory in every house, everywhere.

Snow Patrol had some airplay, but a lot of their music has gone unnoticed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InzRp3Vbik0
Chasing Cars was one song that had success http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxXwIIBlSgw, but the CD Eyes Open is full of should-be hits. Their site has more and a good bio.. http://www.snowpatrol.com/

Stardust Five released their self named debut album in 2006. I like the style of their music, a bit 60’s retro and that is very crisp. They have a nice bio on their website http://www.stardustfive.com/stardustfive.html
Check out the Video link there, it’s a great tune.

Styrofoam did a neat collaboration with Ben Gibbard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6H0tRlRb0M on the album Nothing’s Lost. They have info on the band’s history and audio/video on their web site http://www.styro.be/.

Supergrass is a hard band to describe, but I will compare them to Meatloaf, because their music is like a stage musical sometimes. It’s more fun though; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuarGVJzi38
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_e4PxtQ-Fw

Talking Heads are a very famous band, but I wish they had stayed intact longer than they did. They released a DVD called Stop Making Sense . You should check it out, it’s one of the best live performances I have ever seen.
This is just one song http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3329797410962283073&q=%22stop+making+sense%22&total=67&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=4 but you can find almost all of them on the net. The DVD has cool extras though, and is obviously much better quality.

Theatre of Tragedy is not really my cup of tea, but they are technically a very solid band. They jump from dance to metal if you blink. If they toned down the attitude a bit, they might draw in a larger audience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEmvt0oNPV8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmqmBPCA6oI

I love Tegan and Sara http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujjb5ii4tiU Look around the net, they have been around the block. I am not giving you everything on a platter here. Ok, have this; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_z2XTkAoKlg and note the unusual harmony in the song (typical for them) and the fact that their eyes are closed through most of this acoustic guitar set.

This Busy Monster came and went already. Their experimental sounds are some of the most unique I have ever heard. You can download a free MP3 here http://www.barsuk.com/snd/tbm_underground.mp3 They sound a little like XTC, yes? On their CD Fireworks, released in 2001, included a singing saw on the song What She Said. Who does that?? It’s great though. You can preview songs here http://www.mp3.com/albums/473277/summary.html?tag=albums;title;recent&om_act=convert&om_clk=artalb

Treble Charger just rock out. http://www.vikrecordings.com/treblecharger/multimedia.html
They had a hit with American Psycho http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZqCwEgOv1k but you should check out the whole CD if you like the tune.

Turin Brakes have a bit if a whining sound to them, but the songs are very well written and powerful. I wish they had more success in the US, but when you are on a label based outside the country, it’s rare. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHq423pH10Y
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpW9MrskUVk

There are no U’s.

Something I stumbled on today was the Puppini Sisters out of Italy. http://www.thepuppinisisters.com/ Hilarious! They do a good job, very cute.

This isn’t music, but I found it interesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im5JO8GaG7c

Phoenix Launch

The Phoenix launch this morning went off without a hitch!! Yay! http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/phoenix/main/index.html You have to read what this thing is going to go through to land safely on the surface of Mars. What could possibly go wrong?

Work…

I have NEVER posted anything here about my work before, on purpose. I wanted this Blog to be mostly positive, or at least informational. The events of today compel me, though. I work with what is supposed to be a fairly autonomous team of people (that’s what I was told in the interview anyway) that reach out to all of the IT sections across a major US Government Health entity, to “foster communication and partnerships”. It sounded like a dream job, where I would be able to do some real good.

Some aspects of the work have been very rewarding, especially making sure I reign in my own central IT group when they try to do something really stupid. The problem is; I am being censored when I report on what I have accomplished. It’s funny, that my own immediate management are the ones doing it. Why you ask?? Simple answer; they want to make sure that any of our central IT group's flaws don’t leak out to the people we support. We have to keep our makeup perfect and just paste some more foundation on any cracks or wrinkles that might appear.

It makes us look like Joan Rivers, a pasty bag of wind that really ought to be buried right now. It makes our customers distrustful and takes away from the most honorable mission we have, and also depletes my morale; I suspect the same for others on the team too.

In the two plus years I have been on this team NO ONE has had the least bit of official praise from upper management for what we do, every day. No awards, or pat on the back, or even a “Good Job” in the hallway. They just pile on more responsibilities with no increase in staff or budget. It’s just wrong, on so many levels. The awards go to the usual suspects in this joint, all the people who get them every year. I am sure they deserve them too, for doing the same old thing, again. Did I mention that they are the ones who are best buddies of “Management”? Oops, did I write that out loud? D-duh.

Waaa, I know, I know. Stop whining, you big fat sissy. The point is, I (and I can speak for most of the team I work with, as wanting the same) want to do right by the people I actually support, outside my organization. They are the ones I “work for”, not the bimbos in management above me. And they appreciate what my team does for them more than my managers realize. Want to know why? It’s because my managers never ask anyone. These donkeys don’t look at what I accomplished; they only look at what I am complaining about within my own organization, then take out the big eraser and make those bad vibes disappear from anyone’s sight. All is right in the world, to them.

My immediate manager has not met a single customer I support. He has never come to a regular meeting (that I can recall, anyway) and the one day a month we get the customers all together for a big pow-wow, he works from home, doesn’t even dial into the meeting. He doesn’t participate in what we really do at all.

Out of sight, out of mind... I came to this place to “make a difference”, and I was told I could do that. I was lied to. If anyone needs a customer service/Helpdesk/Desktop Support manager in southern Maryland, please let me know.

Music you haven’t heard…The P’s, Q’s and R’s…

The Pipettes are an all girl UK band with attitude. The most shocking thing about their debut album is that all of the songs are high energy, but really short. Some less than 2 minutes long. It leaves you wanting more, but unfulfilled. They seem to not want to fall into the “repeating verses” trap that wrecks many modern bands. I would just say, write more verses!

Search for more if you like…there are many.

The Polyphonic Spree is another religious band. Tim DeLaughter (from Tripping Daisy) apparently found God. The music is symphonic. Their first CD was their best (The Beginning Stages Of), though I have not heard the new one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQAvflPexng They creep me out a bit.

Porcupine Tree is a good rock band, with a bit of electronic backing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J91CWkYT9yU Dig around and you can find some songs to sample. In Absentia is a real good CD.

The Postal Service is a tough band to research, because you keep hitting the mail sites. Their site here has downloads and video. http://www.postalservicemusic.net/ Listen to it all! They covered the Phil Collins song Against All Odds, from the movie… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kehHqPfRhPo
They are one of my favorite bands ever and I hear they have a new CD in the works.

The Presets is a young band with a lot of energy. Their web site is interesting http://www.thepresets.com/deterioration_content.html

No Q’s???

The Rasmus (don’t ask me what the name means) are another good rock band. They are touring this summer. http://www.therasmus.com/ click Media, then Videos. They have some solid drum beats and play all of their tunes tight. Just solid rock…
I think this was the tune that propelled them http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alwBmF2HLvg

Reamonn (again, don’t ask me what the name means) are a lighter band, than average. I like the music and lyrics. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaW8FyL7xZs

Rilo Kiley features Jenny Lewis from the Postal Service http://www.myspace.com/rilokiley Umm, needs a bit of pepper. I don’t hate it.

Royksopp will be in my top 10 bands, always. They have links to videos here http://www.royksopp.com/videos/index.html The media player links work better, listen to them all. Most of their singers are people from other bands on the label. Including Erlend Øye, who did the vocals on Remind Me. If you have seen the Geico Insurance Caveman Commercials, you will recognize this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBvaHZIrt0o If I have to suggest one CD you should ever buy, it would be Melody A.M.

For my Friend the Belcher...We're a Dying Breed

As a breed, of course. This is practically gay, but not.
It's about nice guys (pussies) like myself. We're a dying breed, only because most men are scumbags who wanna plant their pippicks in anything with a pulse, and then roll over, fart, and sleep. And yes, I hold doors for women and other primates, even here in New York, where people step over dead homelesses in the streets.

To every guy that's said, "Sex CAN wait"
To every guy that's said, "You're beautiful."
To every guy that was never too busy to drive across town to see her.
To every guy that gives flowers and a card when she is sick.
To every guy who has given her flowers just because.
To every guy that said he would die for her.
To every guy that really would.
To every guy that took time to do what she wanted to do.
To every guy that she cried in front of.
To every guy that holds hands with her.To every guy that kisses her with meaning.
To every guy that hugs her when she's sad.
To every guy that hugs her for no reason at all.
To every guy who would give their jacket up for her.
To every guy that calls to make sure she got home safe.
To every guy that would sit and wait for her for hoursjust to see her for ten minutes.
To every guy that would give his seat up.
To every guy that just wants to cuddle.
To every guy that reassured her that she was beautifulno matter what.
To every guy who told his secrets to her.
To every guy that tried to show how much he caredthrough every word and every breath.
To every guy that thought maybe this could be the one.
To every guy that believed in her dreams.
To every guy that would have done anythingso she could achieve them.
To every guy that never laughed at herwhen she told him her dreams.
To every guy that walked her to her car.
To every guy that gave his heart.
To every guy who prays that she is happyeven if you are not with her....
