I was watching TV last night and kept seeing commercials for different meds, and a lot had AstraZenca at the end. So I did some digging and this is a US front (version) of the UK master Company, same name.
No wonder they buy so much TV time, they sell meds to people who may not need them and raked in $13 Billion in Gross Profit for 2009 (projected), up a bit from 2008.
Ever listen to these possible side effects from this crap? Go look up Nexium, Crestor and Prilosec...
I would be safer having sex with Pam Anderson.

Re-Employed
I got the word today that I landed the job at BAE Systems in Rockville MD (one interview and I get one job).
They actually got me more that I thought I would get in salary. Right around what I was making before, so all is well.
I'm off to buy some stock in BAE, because this company has bright future ;) That was 41 days 'unemployed', if anyone was counting. Hell, I have spent almost twice that long completely under water (literally) with no fresh air. A walk in the park this was.
I haven't mentioned that it will be a much shorter drive and I won't have to deal with the beaurocratic/political backstabbing and waste that is heft at NIH. None of that crap in DOD.

How an animated kids movie about food falling from the sky (something I will never see) can hold top numbers for 2 weeks proves America has to be the stupidest country on earth.
Unless, you went home and watched The National Parks on PBS, then there is some hope for you.

ADS Tech
I HIGHLY suggest anyone thinking of buying something to convert those old VHS tapes into a file you can put on a CD, STAY AWAY FROM ADS. Their software is crap and their tech support is utterly useless. I have tried to get the VideoXpress device and Instant DVD working on two computers (Vista and XP) and they are both coming up with a DV0001 error. Looking around the net, a lot of others are having the same problem.
Their "support" site is useless. Don't buy their crap, try another vendor.

Cancelling That EU Missile Program Was A Mistake?
Hmm, well...lets do the math.
Poland and Czech land are about 1000 miles away from Iran.
Iran is about 500 miles away from Israel.
Why put an anti missile system to protect "mainly" Israel outside the circle of the threat? If anywhere, we should put this system in Israel...
We probably already have one there.

Apparently, the gaming community isn't buying into paying $60 for a Halo expansion pack that is packaged as a new game. Wedding Day
Not mine, it was a friend's friend. Just an acquaintance to me.
It was a beautiful ceremony, a few botches, but well done over all. Real nice venue.
Then my friend Jen and I killed an hour waiting for the Reception to start. That went ok, her shoes were hurting her feet though (new shoes).
We got into the reception a bit early and waited, then waited some more and then some more.
I guess it was about an hour more and the bridal party showed up, said a few words and then disappeared for photos. Wait some more. We didn't even have water, but the bowl of ice was melting, so I made do with that.
Finally everyone got seated and there was some funky Korean tea thing and a bunch more pictures. Then we were told the food would be out soon.
Waiting..waiting, and a bit more. Then it arrived...
Um, a whole lot of fishy stuff. I don't dig fishy stuff and Jen is a vegetarian, so she asked for something veggie. They brought her rice, which she wrecked with this red stuff she thought was spicy, but turned out to be vinegar. Funny.
Then they brought out more fishy stuff, and I ate a few greens (Jen doesn't like greens, that's funny). Then this sticky rice came out and it was pretty nasty. I had some chicken, buried under some fishy stuff. It held me over.
I guess if you have a wedding in America, would it kill you to have a Poo Poo Platter or Sweet & Sour Chicken, or the like, some "American" style Chinese/Korean food? Especially if you are inviting us unrefined dumbass white people along? Just a thought..

Unemployed - Week 2
Well, I finished the Living Room, still waiting for the curtains I ordered. I will post pics when I get them up next week.
I went for an interview at BAE today, it was a real easy one, probably because my Resume fits nicely into the position. The HR person I was supposed to meet was not in, so it started off with a lot of waiting in the lobby, bit finished up ok.
Closing out my SAIC job was a pain in the ass. They couldn't figure out how to get the last timecard done and took a lot of calls/emails to sort out. Dummies. I still haven't received the package they said they were mailing to me either.
I finished scanning all of the slides my Dad sent me, over 400. That's my Mom below (sooo pretty). I burned CDs and sent them off to the family that have computers.
Pretty good week, the air has cooled and I don't have to run the AC. Save some scratch....

The Latest "Health" Bill
In looking at the Max Baucus Bill:
Specifically, premiums could vary no more than the ratio specified for each characteristic:
Tobacco use – 1.5:1
Age – 5:1
Family composition:
o Single – 1:1
o Adult with child – 1.8:1
o Two adults – 2:1
o Family – 3:1
Premiums could also vary among, but not within, rating areas to reflect geographic differences. States would define geographic rating areas.
That is pretty obscure stuff. I like punishing anyone with one kid more than a smoker, but rewarding people who have two or more kids. A little strange to me and actually leans in favor of minorities, whom typically have larger families (the current system does this too). This is also very prejudiced against the elderly. 5 to 1 ratio in costs as we get older?? Isn't age a preexisting condition, so we should get a pass?
They allow "across state line" pacts, but not until 2015.
They allow plans to spread out as far as they want, as long as they are licensed in each state they want to work in. I am not sure if this is good or bad, but it could lead to competition. Rates for a given plan can still fluctuate from state to state (boo).
Will not be "used to pay for abortions unless the pregnancy is due to rape, incest, or if the life of the mother is in danger".
Everyone will be "required" to buy some form of health insurance. Socialist, or smart? Up to you, but I don't hear many people complain about Auto Insurance requirements.
This forces all States to create an "Ombudsman Office", but provides no funding to do so. The office will hear complaints about rejected claims, which will be a huge burden on states with certain age demographics (older people).
Sets up a new HHS Health Grants program for $30 Million and "such sums as necessary after these dollars are expended". Too open ended...
Requires Insurers to publicly disclose admin cost percentages right away, I like that! Same as charities.
That's it up till page 42. Read the rest yourselves, you lazy fucks...

Drizzle Vagiszzl
We haven't had rain in a few weeks, but we are getting drizzle right now. I went outside and stood in it and it reminded me a bit of the cool nights in San Diego, when I used to go there often.
It didn't have the same sea smell, even though the wind is out of the east, it was a more dank odor. I can only attribute that smell (reminds me of a cool wet basement) to the huge problem of mould that has enveloped this part of the central eastern US.
I miss San Diego a lot, but don't see myself going back there like I used to, to retire. It's too close to Mexico and all that violence, the fires are a big problem too.

Burmese Fried Beef
My neighbors from Burma (whom I love dearly) just got me to try some "fried beef". Just imagine beef jerky with no salt that is crunchy, like Cheetos.
He explained that it's pressure cooked, dried off, chopped up and then deep fried. They fry a everything.
He said they munch this when they drink in Burma. I asked if it has any nutritional value? He said "probably not", and laughed. Just like most American snack foods. Funny, we have a lot in common.

Unemployed: Week 1
Just to recap the first full week of being unemployed, I accomplished the following:
Send out 3 resumes to different friends and applied for 2 jobs. No word on anything yet. No news = good news, until the checks stop coming next week.
I finished up details on two home improvement things I had started before I lost my job, the stairway had some trim that needed finishing and some power outlets and light switches were swapped out in the dining room. I got white ones to better match the new color scheme, to replace the old tan ones. Good thing I did that, one of the light switches crumbled apart as I tried to remove it. Quite a fire risk.
I have been playing less online chess and reading more news, the more I know about the world the less I like what I hear. I picked up paint and brushes to redo the living room (I hope a gallon of paint is enough). I started ripping up the trim in the room today, nasty work. I just need something to keep me busy, or I will go nuts.
I had two people I know ring me up asking for computer help. I solved their problems, but didn't charge anything.
I watched a lot of Nasa coverage of the Shuttle trip to the Space Station. Nice to have time to do that. I wish more people, especially kids, did too.
I put grass seed down in the back yard, hoping to fill in the areas that seem barren. I think the piss spots my dogs used to regularly use will need to be dug up and filled with topsoil. Nothing will grow there.
I made a large pot of Chili from scratch (my own tomatoes even). It is still aging, but if it's anything like my last batch, it should be great. I will freeze most of it for the winter.

I Don't Get US Republicans
They were totally in charge of the Congress and Whitehouse leading up to the financial disaster. No one here in the US realises the rest of the world points at the US as the cause of it, and they are correct.
Now with this great "Health Debate", they are brainwashed (actually, it's blackmail, [kill the health care reform and we will pay your campaign sir]) by the medical industry lobbyists. These lobby groups are very good at dividing the US populous and generating hate. It all comes down to cash...
It's pretty sick crap going on here. Try listening to both sides of the argument folks.

Robert McDonald
http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/03/virginia-politics-goes-old-school/
I guess I would have to quote Laura Petrie and say "Oh Rob!!"
One thing in the story that I can REALLY get behind is this:
"[He called for the] adoption of a modified flat tax to replace the graduated income tax. Awarding deductions and distributions based on need “is socialist.”
If we hit everyone up for 20% on a flat tax, the national debt would disappear in just a few decades.
The Arctic Seems Lost

Yep, those "ice cores" nail down what temperatures were like for thousands of years. I am sure this is an "exact science" and has 0% chance of being wrong. Even if so, I do beleieve we are (scientifically stated) emerging from an ice age. So is this not natural?
I love the hockey stick reference.

Copy this into notepad and save it as regfix.reg on your Windows PC desktop.
Then, right click on the file and select Merge. If you then close and reopen your browser and go to CNN, NYT, BBC and a lot of other sites and check out the difference. No ads...
You can do all of these things yourself. Anytime you wind up at one of those sites that won't stop asking you to install some software, in IE, click tools, internet options, security tab, restricted sites, sites button and add the annoying site to your list of things to block.
