You Might Be A Zombie If:

  • You feel no need, for Oral Hygiene.
  • Brain Burgers sound tasty.
  • You can’t move fast enough to catch a Bus.
  • All Coworkers avoid you. Actually, everyone does.
  • You feel no pain at all and have insomnia.
  • You can’t operate a door and just bang on the windows.
  • People keep shooting at you.
  • You slur what you call speech.
  • Police try to arrest you, but you always get away.
  • People confuse you for the Teletubbie Po.
  • Flies are more attracted to you, than the Garbage.
  • You pretend to act human when you think no one can see you.
  • Chocolate and Ice Cream are not appealing.
  • All the TV Stations are broadcasting test patterns (could also be an Alien Invasion).
  • All your friends are playing Zombie Farm on Facebook.
  • You are easily distracted by lights or noise.
  • Dogs are really annoying, but not appetising (wait, that's me?!)

Taken (The Movie)

I finally sat down and watched it tonight. Sad to say, I am sorry I bought the DVD. The first 30 minutes could have been shrunken to 5. The car chase/shootouts were out of the 1980s, really crap. The fight sequences were well designed, but poorly filmed (too many quick edits).

I don't know who started the talk about this being a great movie, but you might go back and watch Fist Full Of Dollars or Chocolate and see what a really good action movie looks like.

A Pandemic, Part 7 of 7

25 Sept 2008.
The gas came back on yesterday and the water had picked up enough for drippy showers. We had a hot meal of ravioli and I boiled some water and made hot chocolate from the powdered stuff. It’s getting cold at night now, so this helped warm us and having something sweet was great.

The news was getting better about things, here in the DC area at least. The Hospitals were able to get back to almost normal and they were starting to inoculate the people who had not been done before. The new A.B vaccine (covers both of the current strains of the virus) would be distributed, again from the local schools, but they were saying anyone who only had just the A vaccine before needed to get the A.B one. They were not saying how to tell who has had what inoculation before, though. Very frustrating. I asked my son if he had noticed A or A.B anywhere on the supplies when he was vaccinated back at school, so damn long ago. He couldn’t remember. I decided we would both go when our day came up. They are doing it by first letter of the last name. So we will wait and listen for our letter to come up. They were starting with the T’s and H’s.

The body trucks came through today, yes trucks! The second one waddled out into the field and put a bright yellow plastic flag on the car that had burned, I am guessing to identify it for investigation later.

One of the Oldie stations came on today, no commercials. Kind of cool. I am old enough to appreciate the Beatles and CCR and don’t really think of them as “Oldies”. It was a marathon of those, then the Stones, then The Who. I ran down the batteries in the radio and had to replace them with fresh ones, then I went back to just monitoring the news.

27 Sept 2008.
THE POWER CAME BACK ON YESTERDAY!!! The first thing I did was the very nasty job of cleaning out the fridge and freezer. Bagged everything and put the bags out front. Trash pickup has to resume sometime soon, or this will get messy. A neighbor told me the local grocery was reopening now that power was on. I figured we could walk up there to see what they had. I just wanted to get out of the house really.

I instructed my son to keep his distance from everyone, since our number had not come up for vaccines yet. They announce that “E” and “Q” named people were the lucky ones next and “U” and “I” would be the following day. While walking to the store, my son figured out that they were using “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” to schedule these. Hat’s off to you boy! So we don’t have too much longer to wait. He had taken a typing class in Middle School.

There wasn’t much at the store really (no batteries, consumables) and we did a really good job staying some distance from people. They had setup large fans to blow the smell of the food that had rotted, out of the place. It wasn’t working too well. When we went to checkout with the few items we had picked up, I found out they were not taking credit at all, cash only. The credit authentication services were not back up yet. I have a standing policy of keeping several 20’s tucked away in the back of my wallet, so we were covered. I keep a few hundred in cash stashed at home too, just in case.

The phones are back on and I was able to check-in with my family after multiple failed attempts. Everyone had gotten through this, but my next youngest brother was in the Hospital recovering from exposure to the virus. They are hopeful he will recover fully.

From this point things will start to get back to normal, for sure. This event will have to go down in modern history as a tremendous tragedy and one that I hope people and policy makers will learn from. I will have to wait and see what comes of my own fight to defend myself too. The police have a lot to deal with at this point, so maybe nothing. That will probably be another story for another time.

A Pandemic follow-up.

Ok, I didn’t have an animated Penguin or Speed Boats worked into the story, but I did have Aliens, Spaceships, Gore, Sex (kind of) and Swords. My house was the Castle, so shut up.

I am off on vacation the rest of this week, so there probably won’t be any posts till the weekend. I am sure I will have some tales from the trip. If you enjoyed the Pandemic story, tell a friend.

Chocolate Movie

My widescreen copy of the movie arrived tonight! This is nothing less than excellent. Skip the first 12 minutes, it will only confuse you, as it did me.

This has been overlooked by everyone in America, as far as I have heard. You are missing the boat.

If you ever watched a Jackie Chan/Bruce Lee/Chuck Norris or VanDam movie, you have to see this.

No wires lifting characters up into the sky (just a few safety wires) and no stunt doubles; every cast member did their own stunts.

Fucking amazing movie. If you like action or fighting, buy this DVD.

In The Navy (On the Boat), Part 25

I think all the rocking and rolling we did on the way into Scotland resulted in a Periscope problem. The “torque assist” was burned out, so you had to pull the heavy assed scope around manually. The Nav ETs figured out it was a blown transformer. It was just a little thing, the size you might see in a mid sized transistor radio. No big deal right? The problem was; we had no replacement part on board.

The ETs didn’t know what to do, but one of the Nuke ETs got word about the problem, and took the faulty transformer back aft. He was able to rebuild the transformer, but because we didn’t have the exact same sized wire to rebuild it, he had to count the turns as he unwound the old wire, and recalculate the turns to put on the transformer with the ever slightly heavier gauge wire. Amazingly, it worked. Before we left Scotland, we had a functioning Periscope (this thing was a beast to turn without the torque assist).

I think the Nuke ETs name was Gilbert? and he wound up winning an individual award for fixing the Periscope. He was a strange guy. He had a long gray beard and wild eyes, sunken behind his tiny wired rimmed glasses. He wore painted chicken bones on a string that hung loosely around his neck, very Haitian Voodoo like stuff. He liked to shake the bones at people who pissed him off.

The trip back home started off quiet, then we got word that we had to do something “on the way” and headed north. We were again “extended”. After a while and some more “intel”, we headed south. We would sprint for a while, then come to a stop and circle, listening. It was pretty obvious we were looking for another Boat and it was probably transiting south out of the Norwegian or North Sea.

We kept up this cycle of sprint, stop and listen for a few days. We were off the coast of northern Spain when we went into one of the stop and listen cycles. I was almost off watch and was sweeping my area, joking with Bart.

It came out of our baffles; the area behind the Boat that you can’t listen to with the Sonar…because that listening stuff is all up forward and the propellers make too much noise back there anyway.

Another Boat was going active with its Sonar dead astern. The Sonar guys identified the type of Boat based on the frequency of the active sonar. The Control room went a bit crazy and just then Dyke walked in to take the watch. He asked me “What’s up?”

I told him “It’s 3.5 kilohertz active in the baffles.”, laughing.

The Russian we had been looking for had found us first. The Russians were nuts back then, they didn’t care if they gave away their position, and they would go active to just shock the American or Brit Boats when they stumbled onto them. It worked, we panicked.

The Captain appeared on the Con in seconds. He relieved the OOD and took over. He told the Dive to come to course 270, ahead full, do not cavitate.”, which means run away quietly. I should explain our Captain had commands on Boomer Boats before our Boat and was used to just “evading”. Pussy.

I think any real bad ass Attack Boat Captain would have turned around and gone active right back. Instead we ran away like a dog with its tail between it’s legs. The Cap lost a lot of respect with the crew after this. Honestly, he did what he was trained to do. I guess we all did.

After a while we turned to an intercept course and actually caught up to the Russian Boat. We trailed him into the Straights of Gibraltar, where we broke contact. Thank god. We were getting low on food again. This tracking party was not in the plans.

We had gone from such cold water to such warm water; all of the equipment on the Boat was starting to overheat. We had to kill half of the Fire Control System and the other half had the doors open to try to air cool them. Other electronic systems were in the same condition and the reactor was even running at a reduced capacity because it was too hot.

One other "off the wall" thing of note about the trip back home was the Torpedoman Donnie creating a piece of art. One by one people were being relieved of watch and lead down to the forward berthing Head (bathroom) to take in a viewing of Donnie’s enormous crap. Totally out of the blue.

It was gigantic and wrapped around like a Chocolate soft ice cream dish, spiraling upward to a perfect tip.
It’s a strange thing to be proud of, but Donnie was. At the least, it was a spectacle that we would never see again. Sick, I know…

A few more incidents during the trip back will follow…
